Lingerie Francaise: Ladies of the Silver Screen

Lingerie Francaise 2011 Media Pass

Media Passes

I always keep my media passes from events. Above is my collection of passes from the annual Lingerie Francaise fashion show organized by Brill Communications. On Wednesday evening we attended the fourth such show.

This year’s show took place in the Distillery District, a change from the Artscape Wychwood Barns location which did not have air conditioning on one of the hottest days of the summer last year. I remember all of us on the media riser wondering who would keel over in the stifling heat. This year’s show was just not as hot as last year’s… temperature-wise!

Photos from the fashion show can be viewed by here:

New Webhost

The site experienced some down time yesterday because the web host it was on shut down the site prematurely. I originally thought that this would happen on August 15 based on an E-Mail I received a few days ago.

Fortunately, I had already moved a copy of the site files to a new host months ago, in preparation for this, so there was no need for me to suddenly move 20 GB over the Internet.  Photos from one week of shooting LG fashion week usually take up about 1 GB of disk space.

Everything seems to be settled in now, this blog included.

Marchesa Toronto Fashion Show

Months ago I learned that there would be a Marchesa Fashion Show in Toronto. Thankfully Ron got us accredited for it while we were shooting at LG Fashion Week.

Here are the photos from tonight!

Rogue Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011

For this Rogue Fashion Week, we really didn’t cover too many shows.  After Philip Sparks, we covered Cara Cheung’s Debut Show on Wednesday, and then the Heart Truth Fashion Show on Thursday.

Cara Cheung’s designs were nice, but I had a tough time photographing the models due to there being insufficient lighting, and I think everyone is aware of my stance on using flash. Shooting at f/2.0, 1/250 sec, and ISO 2500, I’m already doing all that I dare to do with the camera, and still I had to bump up the exposure in post-processing. A couple of spots behind the photographers would have done the trick. This is not a knock against the designs, just the show’s set up.

In contrast the lighting for the Heart Truth show was amazing. I was shooting at f/3.5, 1/400 sec, and ISO 400. My photos were a little underexposed, so I had to bump it up a bit in post processing, but not as much as I did for the previous show.

A new look for 2011

The CanadaWears web site has been updated! For a long time now, I wanted to update the appearance of the website, and on Sunday, I finally pulled the trigger.

Work on the alterations had begun a long time ago, but it was only in the background. I was not entirely happy with the database structure, and wanted to clean up some of the data that had been building up over the years.  That process took the longest as I figured out how to import the old data into a new structure, all the while I was still shooting events and adding even more data!

Finally after November, there was a lengthy break to make a push for the new site. Cold winter nights, and staying indoors provided plenty of opportunity to chip away at the project.

So what is different? The site layout is wider, with a permanent column on the right for secondary information and navigation controls.  I finally took the suggestion from Ron to get rid of the square-shaped thumbnails and replace them with rectangular ones, thus not concealing parts of the larger image. Regenerating all those thumbnails was quite a task!  For shows that are part of larger events, links to every show are displayed in the right column so that it is easier to jump around between show photos.

As time progresses, more changes will find their way into the site.  For now, I am happy with what is out there.

Motionball 2011 DECADENCE Gala

On February 4th, I was invited by Duet Public Relations to attend Motionball 2011. I attended my first Motionball Gala last year up at the Capitol Event Theatre. This year, for their tenth anniversary the event was held downtown at the Carlu. With a different location for the event, I found myself unsure about what gear I needed to bring. For the runway show in 2010, I was right up against the edge of the runway, and shooting with a fast low-light prime lens. I had brought my Pelican case which came in handy, but was also a bit of a hinderance. I remember having to play the “media card” against some people who had already taken up a spot at the end of the runway to watch the show. With the case though, I was able to sit in front of them without blocking their view. The downside about having the case with me that night was its weight, and my inability to be mobile and photograph the silent auction, and the venue. This year I wanted to pack lightly, so that I could walk around. I accomplished this with my shoulder bag. It appears that LowePro may have discontinued this product, as I cannot find it on their website anymore.

LowePro Pro Mag 2 AW

Somehow, I was able to fit two pro-sized SLR camera bodies, a 70-200mm lens, a 135mm lens, a 35mm lens, a 16-35mm lens, a speedlight, flash battery pack, and my cellphone. I have been suffering with a cold this week, so I also stuffed in some Halls and tissue! I was really quite amazed at what I was able to pack into such a small space! Anyways, with the shoulder bag, I was able to walk around and take pictures before the runway show, but I remained worried about the new location setup, and possibly needing to bud in front of people without being able to offer a nice compromise.

Thankfully, I was able to secure a decent spot for myself, and did not need to sit in front of people, or stand on top of the case to see over people (that in itself is a pretty neat trick, which I had to do in Ottawa back in October).

Bruno Ierullo 2011 Collection Fashion Show

One last hurrah for 2010? On Friday evening, I was invited by my friend, Yuli Mitsner of after2night.com to photograph Bruno Ierullo’s 2011 Collection Fashion Show.

My photographs can be found here: http://canadawears.ca/2010/bruno-ierullo-2011-collection-fashion-show/

Be sure to click the Photo Set links to see everything.

The show ran unusually long, about one straight hour with about two hundred and fifty looks. One of the models on facebook posted that she went through fourteen outfit changes! It was quite an endurance test for the photographers as well. Standing still for one hour, and clicking the shutter button about 4500 times will do a number on you.I missed last year’s show because it conflicted with LG Fashion Week’s show times, and I just could not attend. This time, the timing worked out better. On another note, the drive home after the show was remarkable in that some rather dense fog had descended onto the city, making for an interesting commute. All ended well with one close call, but no accidents.
